Athleticstalk.com | Oakland Athletics News, athletics Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Welcome to Under the Bleachers, where the best MLB writers from Bleacher Report give their unique take on the latest action.
Who's Tops at the Bottom of the Ninth?
It's easy to say that the save is an overvalued, over-hyped statistic ... until your team's relief ace goes all Byung-Hyun Kim on you. Who's the best and who's the worst to trot out in a save situation? The pitchers get pretty obscure at the bottom of the rankings. For instance, none of the Nats' 16 fans have any idea what Joel Hanrahan looks like.
Jose Reyes, RBI Machine
Jose Reyes is a force at the top of the order, but maybe he could make even more noise driving in some runs from the 3 hole. Steal-hungry fantasy owners cringe, but Reyes seems to be willing to do whatever it takes to keep the Mets from fading again this year. Of course, if he's serious about that, he should probably start learning to throw a curveball.
It's Nice, But It's No Dodgertown
Here's a series of up-close shots of the Dodger's new spring training digs at Camelback Ranch. Coming tomorrow: a gripping photo essay depicting the tire marks the team left while tearing out of Vero Beach.
Wait, When Did He Throw a No-No?
MLB's seen 257 no-hitters, and they haven't all come from star hurlers. (Hey, Hideo Nomo's got two!) Here's a look at some of the least likely no-nos of all time. Take heed, Anibal Sanchez. You're about two seasons away from being in the company of the immortal Bud Smith. Remember him? Yeah, neither do we.
Crosby and Khalil at the crossroads
After being Rookies of the Year for their respective leagues in 2004, Khalil Greene and Bobby Crosby have seen their careers taper off. Could they turn it around this year? The good news for Greene is that he's out of San Diego. The good news for Crosby is ... um ... that it'll be really hard for him to get injured or make outs from the bench?Check out more fan opinions by going to Bleacher Report's MLB page.
