Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-16

Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-16
--OF Matt Holliday was in Oakland's lineup Friday, two days after feeling a little twinge in his side during an at-bat. He stayed in that game but his side stiffened up a bit later, and manager Bob Geren had wanted to check in with him after Friday's batting practice. Batting practice was rained out, but Holliday remained in the lineup and went 2-for-3.

--LHP Jerry Blevins was sent down to Class AAA Sacramento along with RHP Jeff Gray when the A's needed roster spots for RHP Santiago Casilla and OF Aaron Cunningham. This is Blevins' second demotion of the season; he had a 12.46 ERA in five appearances. The A's now are without a left-hander in the bullpen.

--RHP Jeff Gray was sent to Class AAA Sacramento, as expected, to make room for RHP Santiago Casilla. Gray worked only 1/3 of an inning, retiring the only batter he faced. He does not appear to be high on Oakland's priority list among their large group of young relievers.

--OF Aaron Cunningham was recalled from Class AAA Sacramento and was in the lineup Friday night, batting ninth and playing right. Cunningham separated his right shoulder three games into the season at Sacramento, but he went 4-for-12 after returning to the River Cats on Monday. OF Travis Buck is likely to see his playing time reduced further with Cunningham's promotion.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Santiago Casilla (sprained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Stockton on May 9, and he was activated May 15.

LHP Dallas Braden (sore left hand) was hit by a line drive May 10 but kept pitching and is not expected to miss a start, although it tentatively has been pushed back a day.

LHP Brett Anderson (blister on left index finger) left his April 28 and May 4 starts because of the ailment. He missed his May 9 start, and he is questionable for his next start.

3B Eric Chavez (sore right forearm and elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25. He was slowed by a back ailment in early May, pushing back his possible return to late May.

INF Nomar Garciaparra (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. The injury had dogged him for weeks. He might be activated May 15 or soon after.

2B Mark Ellis (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He will miss four to six weeks.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. He could resume pitching in late May. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He had Tommy John surgery April 21, and he is out for the season.
