Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-14

Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-14
--3B/1B Nomar Garciaparra ran the bases before Wednesday's game and said it's the first time he's really pushed it since going on the DL with a calf strain on April 29. Manager Bob Geren said he believes Garciaparra will come off the DL this weekend at Detroit or early next week at Tampa Bay. The A's need his right-handed bat; they're 3-11 against left-handed starters.

--LHP Dallas Braden threw a side session, three days after getting drilled in the left hand by a line drive. Braden's next start will be pushed back a day, to Saturday, according to manager Bob Geren, although Geren said that's subject to change, Braden was hit in the first inning Sunday and remained in for six innings despite a severely swollen pitching hand.

--LHP Brett Anderson played catch on Wednesday without a bandage on his left index finger. Anderson's last two starts were shortened by a blister on the finger, and he is scheduled to start on Friday at Detroit. The rookie will have had 10 days off between starts.

--RHP Santiago Casilla is set to come off the disabled list on Friday at Detroit after throwing a nine-pitch 1-2-3 inning at Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday. Casilla, who is out with a knee strain, had to throw 14 more pitches in the bullpen because his inning was too quick. RHP Jeff Gray was sent back down to Triple-A Sacramento after Wednesday's game to make room for Casilla on the roster.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Dallas Braden (left hand) was hit by a line drive May 10 but kept pitching and is not expected to miss a start, although it tentatively has been pushed back a day.

LHP Brett Anderson (blister on left index finger) left his April 28 and May 4 starts because of the ailment. He missed his May 9 start, and he is questionable for his next start.

3B Eric Chavez (sore right forearm and elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25. He was slowed by a back ailment in early May, pushing back his possible return to late May.

RHP Santiago Casilla (sprained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Stockton on May 9, and he could be activated May 15.

INF Nomar Garciaparra (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. The injury had dogged him for weeks. He might be activated May 15 or soon after.

2B Mark Ellis (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He will miss four to six weeks.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. He could resume pitching in late May. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He had Tommy John surgery April 21, and he is out for the season.
