Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-13

Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-13
--3B/1B Nomar Garciaparra remains a possibility to return to the active roster Friday at Detroit, the first day he is eligible to come off the disabled list. Garciaparra has missed much of the first six weeks of the season with calf trouble, and he is on the DL with a right calf strain. Jack Hannahan is likely to be sent back to Class AAA Sacramento when Garciaparra returns.

--LHP Dallas Braden's left hand was still swollen and wrapped two days after absorbing a line drive hit by Vernon Wells. "Hey, it's still attached," said Braden, who plans to throw the side on Wednesday and take his turn Friday at Detroit. If Braden can't go, LHP Brett Anderson, RHP Sean Gallagher and RHP Dan Giese are possibilities.

--LHP Brett Anderson's next start is still up in the air because of blister problems with his left index finger. Manager Bob Geren had been considering Anderson for Friday or Saturday night at Detroit, but there is a good chance that RHP Sean Gallagher will pitch in place of the rookie. Because of off days, Anderson or LHP Dallas Braden (swollen left hand) could be pushed back as far as May 18.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Dallas Braden (left hand) was hit by a line drive May 10 but kept pitching and is not expected to miss a start.

LHP Brett Anderson (blister on left index finger) left his April 28 and May 4 starts because of the ailment. He missed his May 9 start, and he was questionable for his next start.

3B Eric Chavez (sore right forearm and elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25. He was slowed by a back ailment in early May, pushing back his possible return to late May.

RHP Santiago Casilla (sprained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Stockton on May 9, and he could be activated May 15.

INF Nomar Garciaparra (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. The injury had dogged him for weeks. He might be activated May 15.

2B Mark Ellis (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He will miss four to six weeks.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. He could resume pitching in late May. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He had Tommy John surgery April 21, and he is out for the season.
