Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-09

Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-09
--RHP Andrew Bailey earned his first save with two scoreless innings. He was subbing for RHP Brad Ziegler, who has the flu. Manager Bob Geren said Ziegler could have pitched if necessary, but Bailey did fine in the eighth so stuck around for the ninth. Bailey has a 1.27 ERA in 15 outings.

--SS Orlando Cabrera, who batted leadoff Thursday for the first time with the A's, was back at No. 1 on Friday. He went 1-for-4 with an RBI, but he's hitting only .230. C Kurt Suzuki hit second again and also went 1-for-4 with an RBI. CF Ryan Sweeney, the new No. 6 hitter, was the only Oakland hitter with two hits (including a homer).

--RHP Sean Gallagher will make his first start for the A's on Saturday. Early in spring training, he was considered a candidate for the season-opening rotation, but he opened in the bullpen and was demoted to Class AAA Sacramento. Now he's back. He has made four relief appearances, allowing three runs in seven innings.

--LHP Trevor Cahill recorded his first major league victory Thursday with seven strong innings against Texas, allowing one run on Chris Davis' homer in the fifth. Cahill did not walk a batter for the first time in six big-league starts. The A's scored nine runs while Cahill was on the mound. His run support was under three runs per game entering Thursday.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Brett Anderson (blister on left index finger) left his April 28 and May 4 starts due to the ailment. He will miss his May 9 start.

3B Eric Chavez (sore right forearm and elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25. He hopes to return May 15.

RHP Santiago Casilla (sprained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29. He will start a rehab assignment during the weekend of May 8-10, and he could be activated may 15.

INF Nomar Garciaparra (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. The injury had dogged him for weeks.

2B Mark Ellis (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He will miss four to six weeks.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. He could resume pitching in late May. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He had Tommy John surgery April 21, and he is out for the season.
