Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-07
--LHP Brett Anderson's next turn in the rotation will be skipped because of the blister that ended his last two outings early. Anderson said his left index finger is much improved, but the A's have decided to have RHP Sean Gallagher start Saturday against Toronto. Gallagher worked 3 2/3 innings in relief of Anderson on Monday. Because of two A's off days next week, the team technically won't need Anderson until May 19, but he is likely to pitch well before then, so the A's are not considering placing him on the DL.

--RHP Sean Gallagher will start Saturday in place of rookie LHP Brett Anderson, who is out with a blister on his left index finger. Gallagher, who spent nearly two weeks at Class AAA Sacramento, worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Anderson on Monday. He is a possibility to remain in the rotation if he pitches well because RHP Dan Giese was making what was termed a spot start Wednesday night. After two days off next week, the A's will need a full five-man rotation beginning May 14.

--3B Eric Chavez told the San Francisco Chronicle he believes he can play on the team's next road trip, which begins May 14 at Detroit. Chavez, who is on the disabled list with what the newspaper described as nerve inflammation in the right forearm and elbow, said he is scheduled to do all activity, including hitting, before Friday's game.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Brett Anderson (blister on left index finger) left his April 28 and May 4 starts due to the ailment. He will miss his May 9 start.

3B Eric Chavez (sore right forearm and elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25. He hopes to return May 15.

RHP Santiago Casilla (sprained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29.

INF Nomar Garciaparra (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. The injury had dogged him for weeks.

2B Mark Ellis (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He will miss four to six weeks.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. He could resume pitching in late May. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He had Tommy John surgery April 21, and he is out for the season.
