Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-06
Oakland's off to another record-setting pace for using the disabled list. After using the DL 47 times over the past two years, including a team-record 25 times in 2008, the A's have put seven men on the DL through the first 22 games. At that clip, the team would use the DL 52 times this season. Two men, top starter Justin Duchscherer and reliever Joey Devine, are on the 60-day DL, and Devine is out for the season.

PLAYER NEWS:

--LHP Dana Eveland was sent to Class AAA Sacramento to try to regain his command. Eveland, who was part of the Dan Haren deal with Arizona before the 2008 season, has a team-high 7.40 ERA and opponents are hitting .380 against him, the highest opponents' average in the league. Eveland was sent down for a tune-up last year and came back much improved.

--RHP Dan Giese will make a spot start Wednesday vs. the Rangers, filling in the opening left when LHP Dana Eveland was demoted to Class AAA Sacramento. Giese is coming off a nice effort in long relief in Sacramento in which he retired all 10 men he faced. Giese was claimed off waivers from the Yankees before the season started.

--LHP Brett Anderson remains iffy for his next scheduled start on Saturday because of a blister on his left index finger. The blister has caused Anderson's early exit in two consecutive starts, and it limited his effectiveness Monday against the Angels because he was unable to throw his fastball well. RHP Sean Gallagher is a possible option if Anderson can't go Saturday.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Brad Ziegler (illness) was unavailable April 30-May 3. He returned to action May 5.

LHP Brett Anderson (blister on left index finger) was affected by the ailment in his April 28 and May 4 starts. He is questionable for his May 9 start.

OF Ben Copeland (sprained left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He was activated May 5.

3B Eric Chavez (strained right elbow, sore right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25.

RHP Santiago Casilla (sprained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29.

INF Nomar Garciaparra (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. The injury had dogged him for weeks.

2B Mark Ellis (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He will miss four to six weeks.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health. He is expected to return in early May.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He had Tommy John surgery April 21, and he is out for the season.
