Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-04

Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-05-04
Oakland's off to another record-setting pace for using the disabled list. After using the DL 47 times over the past two years, including a team-record 25 times in 2008, the A's have put seven men on the DL through the first 22 games. At that clip, the team would use the DL 52 times this season. Two men, top starter Justin Duchscherer and reliever Joey Devine, are on the 60-day DL, and Devine is out for the season.

PLAYER NOTES:

--3B Eric Chavez had an MRI on his sore right elbow and it showed no structural damage, according to manager Bob Geren. Geren said there is no specific timetable for Chavez's return and that Chavez will be the best judge of how he's feeling and when to resume activity.

--2B Mark Ellis had an MRI on his strained left calf muscle and A's manager Bob Geren said that Ellis is expected to miss a month-to-six weeks because of the severity of the injury. Ellis has been on the DL four times in the past three years but he never has had a calf injury before.

--RHP Santiago Casilla was placed on the disabled list on Saturday with a strained right lateral collateral ligament (knee). Manager Bob Geren said that Casilla is expected to be ready to go when he's eligible to come off the DL on April 14. LHP Gio Gonzalez was recalled from Class AAA Sacramento to join Oakland's bullpen.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Brad Ziegler (illness) was unavailable for April 30-May 3. He could return on May 4.

LHP Brett Anderson (blister on left index finger) left the April 28 game. He is expected to be ready for his May 4 start.

3B Eric Chavez (strained right elbow, sore right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25.

RHP Santiago Casilla (sprained right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29.

INF Nomar Garciaparra (strained right calf) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. The injury had dogged him for weeks.

2B Mark Ellis (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He will miss four to six weeks.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health. He is expected to return in early May.

OF Ben Copeland (sprained left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Copeland is a Rule 5 draftee from the Giants.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He had Tommy John surgery April 21, and he is out for the season.
