Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-04-15

Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-04-15
Oakland's biggest question mark coming into the season was the young rotation, but the A's rookie pitchers weren't the problem as the team dropped four of its first six games. Instead, it was the beefed up offense, which was stranding runners at a high clip -- 59 in the first six games, the most in the majors. Oakland's cleanup hitters -- usually Matt Holliday -- spent the first week batting .200, and the No. 5 hitters batted .167.

PLAYER NEWS:

--3B Eric Chavez got an MRI on his sore right shoulder Tuesday. That's the same shoulder Chavez had surgery on twice in less than two years, but Chavez believes his current problem isn't related to the surgery. He jammed his neck and shoulder diving back to first base Friday night. The MRI indicated tendinitis, and Chavez will not play before Saturday.

--RHP Joey Devine will get the bone scan and CT scan Wednesday that Dr. James Andrews recommended on April 8. Devine has been sidelined three times in less than a year with a sore right elbow. He is on the 60-day disabled list, an indication that the team believes surgery might be required for the co-closer.

--OF Travis Buck, who started off the season 1-for-11, had three hits Tuesday night, including an infield hit that drove in the winning run in the 12th inning. Buck is trying to avoid his fate of last year, when a slow start (.190 in the first month) led to his demotion in early May. Buck is a career .194 hitter in April, including Tuesday night's three hits.

--INF Nomar Garciaparra left Tuesday's game in the top of the second with tightness in his right calf. In the bottom of the first, he'd gone from first to third on a single and scored on an infield single. Manager Bob Geren called it a precautionary move considering how cold and windy the conditions were in Oakland. The A's already are without 3B Eric Chavez until Saturday at the earliest; Bobby Crosby took over at third when Garciaparra exited.

MEDICAL WATCH:

INF Nomar Garciaparra (right calf tightness) left the April 14 game. He is day-to-day.

3b Eric Chavez (neck, right shoulder stiffness) did not play April 11-14, and he won't return before April 18.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health. He is expected to return in early May.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He was scheduled for a bone scan and CT scan on April 15.

OF Ben Copeland (sprained left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Copeland is a Rule 5 draftee from the Giants.
