--RHP Vin Mazzaro will not make his scheduled start Friday against the Mariners. The rookie will be pushed back due to shoulder tendinitis, and RHP Clayton Mortensen will be called up to pitch. Mazzaro will be worked back into the rotation in the next week if possible. Mortensen allowed eight hits and eight runs in four innings in his only other start for Oakland, a loss at Kansas City last month. He was obtained in the Matt Holliday trade with the Cardinals in July. --RHP Brett Tomko, who had allowed only three runs over his first three starts with the A's, gave up four in the first inning alone Thursday. Tomko gave up six runs in all in 5 2/3 innings, all via two-run homers. Tomko had been pushed back one day because of minor ribcage soreness after his last start. --RHP Andrew Bailey was named the AL Rookie of the Month for August after going 2-0 and converting all seven of his save opportunities. He gave up four hits in 11 innings and did not walk a batter. He has earned saves in each of his past 16 chances. Bailey is two shy of Huston Street's Oakland rookie record for saves of 23, set in 2005.
MEDICAL WATCH:
OF Scott Hairston (sore left quadriceps) did not play Sept. 2-3. He is day-to-day.
LHP Dallas Braden (infection on left foot and ankle and inflamed nerve) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Aug. 1. He was unable to throw a side session Aug. 11, and a session on Aug. 19 caused him pain. His season might be over.
RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 29. He had a setback in May while rehabbing in Arizona, incurring some back stiffness, but he resumed his throwing program a few days later. The back problem caused him to be shut down again days later. He resumed throwing in early July, and he started a rehab assignment with Class A Stockton on July 26. On July 31, he was scratched from a start with Class AAA Sacramento for undisclosed reasons. He started Aug. 9 for Sacramento, then started Aug. 13 in the rookie-level Arizona League. He was scratched from a possible Aug. 18 start with the A's because of a "non-baseball related issue." On Aug. 21, the A's and Duchscherer's agent announced that he would miss the rest of the season because of clinical depression.
LHP Josh Outman (sprained left elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 20, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 28. He had season-ending Tommy John surgery June 30.
3B Eric Chavez (sore right forearm and elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 25, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 19. He was slowed in May by a herniated disk in his back, and he had season-ending back surgery June 23.
RHP Dan Giese (torn ulnar collateral ligament in right arm) went on the 15-day disabled list May 18, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 2. He had season-ending Tommy John surgery June 9.
RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He had season-ending Tommy John surgery April 21. He threw Aug. 15 for the first time since his surgery.
