Oakland Athletics Roster Report 2009-04-08
Oakland's injury situation began to look up toward the end of the spring, and often injured 3B Eric Chavez and 2B Mark Ellis were ready for the start of the season. Starting pitching remains a big question mark, especially with All-Star Justin Duchscherer and co-closer Joey Devine shelved by elbow injuries, and the starters could be in flux much of the season. LHP Brett Anderson earned a rotation job, showing good poise to go along with big-league-ready stuff, and Duchscherer's sore elbow resulted in a spot for RHP Trevor Cahill. LHP Josh Outman beat out RHP Sean Gallagher for the final opening in the rotation.

PLAYER NEWS:

--OF Matt Holliday missed Tuesday night's game at Anaheim because of illness. Manager Bob Geren told reporters that Holliday had felt unwell on opening night, too, but had decided to play. Geren said he is hopeful that Holliday will be back in the lineup Wednesday.

--RHP Trevor Cahill made his major league debut Tuesday and allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings. The 21-year-old, who never had pitched beyond Class AA, walked five (one intentionally) and struck out one while allowing five hits. He didn't factor in the decision, leaving with the score tied. His next start will come Sunday against Seattle.

--OF Travis Buck made his first appearance of the 2009 season Tuesday, playing left field with Matt Holliday out sick. Buck, who lost his job in the first half of last season, impressed the team with a strong September and a good spring. He is expected to be in the lineup when Jack Cust is the DH and Jason Giambi is at first. He recorded his first hit of the season, a two-out single in the sixth.

--DH Jason Giambi recorded his first RBI since returning to his old club, driving in Ryan Sweeney with a double in the eighth off Darren Oliver. Giambi, who went hitless on opening night, had three hits Tuesday and scored a run. He was the DH in each of the A's first two games, though he is expected to get the bulk of his time at first base.

MEDICAL WATCH:

OF Matt Holliday (illness) sat out the April 7 game. He is day-to-day.

RHP Justin Duchscherer (arthroscopic elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. There is a chance that when he is able to throw off the mound, he will be moved into the bullpen to try to safeguard his health. He is expected to return in early May.

RHP Joey Devine (sore right elbow) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He was scheduled to be examined by Dr. James Andrews on April 8.

OF Ben Copeland (sprained left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. Copeland is a Rule 5 draftee from the Giants.
