--DH Mike Sweeney had two days off at Class AAA Sacramento. He returned to action Monday night and went 0-for-3. Sweeney, who had arthroscopic surgery on both knees on June 11, is 1-for-12 in his rehab assignment and it appears unlikely he will rejoin the team before Sept. 1.
--RHP Sean Gallagher (fatigued arm) has resumed throwing, making 35 tosses from 120 feet Sunday. He is expected to increase that distance Tuesday. Gallagher still hopes to make a few starts before the end of the season.
--1B Daric Barton is 6-for-13 with two homers since snapping an 0-for-14 streak. His solo homer in the third gave the A's a lead they did not relinquish in beating the Angels on Monday. The rookie is batting .212, the lowest mark in the majors.
BY THE NUMBERS: 721 -- Player games missed this year, through Aug. 24, as the A's had to use the disabled list an Oakland-record 23 times. The team had seven men on the DL through the weekend.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's a beautiful thing, ain't it? Kind of an alien invasion." -- A's left-handed reliever Alan Embree on Oakland's all left-handed rotation of Dallas Braden, Gio Gonzalez, Greg Smith, Dan Meyer and Dana Eveland.
