Oakland Athletics Notes, Quotes 2008-07-02
--3B Eric Chavez has not played third base since May 21 because of a sore right shoulder. Manager Bob Geren said that he planned to have both Chavez and Jack Hannahan in the lineup on Tuesday night at Anaheim, anyway, so he had Hannahan at third base. Chavez had surgery to clean up the shoulder in October.

--DH Frank Thomas (quadriceps strain) will get another MRI on Monday in Southern California and then meet with Dr. Richard Ferkel on Tuesday next week to determine if he can begin baseball activity. Thomas had hoped to be allowed to begin hitting this week. He will accompany the team to Chicago and continue doing rehab and physical therapy before coming back to Los Angeles.

--SS Bobby Crosby has 26 doubles, tying the Oakland record for the most doubles before the All-Star break, a mark set by Joe Rudi in 1974. Crosby's doubles total is good for third most in the league. He is the A's only player to start all 83 games this year.

--2B Mark Ellis is batting .339 on the road, the highest road average in the American League. His home batting average is .193 -- the lowest home batting average in the league. Ellis had been hitting leadoff much of June, but Ryan Sweeney replaced him atop the order on Monday.

--RHP Brad Ziegler extended his scoreless streak to 15 innings by retiring all six men he faced. It's the longest scoreless streak to open a career by an Oakland pitcher since Steve Chitren's 15 1/3 innings in 1990. Ziegler struck out three on Tuesday.

BY THE NUMBERS: .000 -- A's pinch hitters were hitless over their past 20 at-bats, and 3 for their past 34 (.088) through June 29. Oakland's last pinch hit came on May 10, by Mike Sweeney at Texas, and the last extra-base hit by an A's pinch hitter was a double by Bobby Kielty on Sept. 22, 2006.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I wish I could get the DeLorean from 'Back to the Future,' and go back and throw a different pitch." -- RHP Justin Duchscherer, on the 2-1 fastball that Ray Durham stroked for a double in the Giants' 1-0 win on June 28, the only hard hit ball of the day for San Francisco.
