Oakland Athletics Notes, Quotes 2008-06-28
--C Kurt Suzuki's career-high-tying nine-game hitting streak ended Friday when he went 0-for-4 against the Giants. Suzuki struck out twice. With the A's in a stretch of 20 consecutive games and facing far fewer off days in the second half, Suzuki is likely to get more rest in the coming months. His 626 innings caught this year lead the majors.

--OF Ryan Sweeney remained out of action with a moderate left ankle sprain incurred while sliding into home plate Thursday. Manager Bob Geren said that Sweeney is likely to need at least another day or two or rest. Should Sweeney's injury linger, the A's probably would consider recalling OF Travis Buck from Class AAA Sacramento; Buck spent the last week on the minor-league DL with a concussion.

--LHP Dana Eveland had his second-longest outing of the season, pitching 7 1/3 innings and allowing one run against the Giants. Eveland has not allowed a home run in his past six starts. He is 6-0 in starts in which the A's give him three runs of support or more.

--RHP Kiko Calero was released Friday after refusing a minor league assignment. The reliever had been designated for assignment last week, when RHP Santiago Casilla came off the disabled list. The emergence of rookie RHP Brad Ziegler, who hasn't allowed a run in 12 career appearances, made Calero expendable.

--3B Eric Chavez did not play because of continued soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder. Chavez hasn't played third base for a week, and manager Bob Geren said he does not expect him back in the lineup until Sunday or Monday at the earliest. Chavez is hitless in his past 10 at-bats.

--RHP Joey Devine threw off the mound for the first time in more than a month. Devine, who has a strained elbow ligament, threw 24 pitches and he will throw off the mound again this week before throwing a simulated inning at the end of next week.

BY THE NUMBERS: 14 -- The A's league-leading pickoff total through June 22, double their tally of all of last year. Rookie Greg Smith has eight of those, the most in the majors.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Honestly, it's way too early to think about it. Orlando is an unbelievable second baseman and I don't know what their plans are, and I have no idea what's going to happen with the A's. But obviously, I live here (in Phoenix) and there are a lot of attractive things about it." ?- A's second baseman Mark Ellis, on speculation around the Diamondbacks that he might be Arizona's target should Orlando Hudson leave as a free agent.
