--OF Jack Cust was moved from fifth to third in the lineup on Saturday, swapping places with 1B Jason Giambi. Manager Bob Geren said he wants Cust, who has been one of the team's few reliable hitters this year, to get an extra at-bat per game. Cust had 11 RBI in nine games through May 17.
--INF Nomar Garciaparra did not work out on Sunday because of some soreness in his right calf, but manager Bob Geren said that Wednesday at Tampa Bay is a possible return date for the right-handed hitter because the A's will be facing lefty Scott Kazmir. Garciaparra has spent two and a half weeks on the DL with chronic calf trouble. --OF Matt Holliday had his first four-hit game with Oakland on Sunday, recording four singles in the team's 11-7 loss and scoring a run. He also walked, and he lifted his average to .267. With the A's off to a 13-21 start, second worst in the league, chances are increasing that the club will move Holliday before the trade deadline.
BY THE NUMBERS: 14 -- The A's steal total through May 17, the fewest in the league. Oakland has been caught 10 times, tied for fourth most, and their success rate is the AL's worst.
