Athleticstalk.com | Oakland Athletics News, athletics Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Joey Devine went on the disabled list with what he described as a strained ulnar collateral ligament along with tendinitis in the flexor muscle and fluid buildup in the area. Devine, who has been among the A's top relievers this season, will not throw for three to seven days and then begin light throwing. Depending on the severity of the injury, he could be out three to six weeks.
--DH Mike Sweeney was placed on the disabled list with a sore left knee. Much of the season, Sweeney's surgically repaired right knee has troubled him, but the left has been the issue lately and the team decided to give the veteran enough time to get the swelling and soreness out of the joint. Sweeney was batting .292. --OF Ryan Sweeney, who has the best average among the A's regulars at .293, went on the DL with a bruised left foot. Sweeney was expected to miss only a few days after fouling a ball off his foot on Wednesday, but the A's decided they could not play short in the outfield for any extended stretch. Sweeney should be completely ready to go after the 15 days are up.
--OF Carlos Gonzalez, 22, was called up from Class AAA Sacramento and the A's top prospect made his major-league debut, batting eighth against Texas on Friday night and hitting a double in his first at-bat. Gonzalez, who was acquired in the Dan Haren trade with Arizona in December, played center field in Arlington.
--OF Travis Buck was recalled from Class AAA Sacramento, where he was batting .337, and he was placed back atop the Oakland lineup. Buck was sent to Sacramento on a rehab assignment in early May because of shin splints, but he was activated and optioned to Sacramento on May 10. He was expected to be the A's every day right fielder coming out of spring training.
--RHP Brad Ziegler was promoted from Class AAA Sacramento to join the Oakland bullpen. It was the first major-league call-up for Ziegler, a 28-year-old side-armer who had a 2-0 record and a 0.37 ERA at Sacramento with eight saves. He had struck out 20 and walked four in 24 1/3 innings.
--RHP Kiko Calero, who missed much of last year and the start of this season with a torn rotator cuff, was recalled from a rehab assignment at Class AAA Sacramento, where he was 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA. Calero did not have shoulder surgery but rehabbed the injury instead.
--LHP Lenny DiNardo was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the big-league roster and on the 40-man roster on a day in which Oakland called up four players from Class AAA Sacramento. There could be some interest in DiNardo, with several clubs looks for left-handed pitching, especially considering that DiNardo is versatile enough to start and to pitch in relief.
BY THE NUMBERS: 11 -- Times the A's have used the disabled list this season, already halfway to last year's Oakland-record mark of 22. Andrew Brown was the most recent addition to the DL after requiring an appendectomy last week. Eric Chavez and Kiko Calero are both close to coming off the DL, perhaps within the next week.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "This reminds me exactly of what he did in 2006. The way he's hitting, homers can come in a hurry and they can come often." -? A's second baseman Mark Ellis, on Frank Thomas' recent power surge. Thomas has hit four homers in five games.
