--3B Jack Hannahan, who filled in at third base for Oakland much of last year, was recalled Friday because of the continuing availability issues with Eric Chavez and Nomar Garciaparra. Chavez started at third Friday, but Hannahan, who hit a major-league low .218 last year, entered the game in the eighth and hit a solo homer. He was batting .157 at Class AAA Sacramento.
--1B-DH Jason Giambi did not play Friday night because of minor hamstring soreness, according to manager Bob Geren, but he is expected to be in the lineup Saturday. Giambi is batting .204 with six RBIs and zero homers. Giambi is 2-for-20 with eight strikeouts lifetime against Rays starter Scott Kazmir, who pitched Friday night. --RHP Andrew Bailey is from New Jersey and attended Wagner College on Staten Island, so he had many friends and relatives at the A's series in New York. "I heard them when I was running out to the bullpen," the rookie told the San Francisco Chronicle. "They started an 'An-drew Bail-ey' chant and some of the Yankee fans joined in. What a great experience."
--Oakland's Monday rainout at Yankee Stadium will be made up on July 23, which had been scheduled as a travel day for the A's. Because Oakland will be playing in 28 consecutive games as a result of the rescheduled contest, the A's players had to vote to OK it. Union rules prohibit teams from playing more than 20 consecutive games. In addition, the game postponed in Anaheim after Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a car accident will be replayed on Aug. 27.
BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Home runs hit by the A's in the first 12 games of the season, the fewest in the majors. Former Oakland infielder Marco Scutaro hit four home runs in the first 12 games.
