Oakland Athletics Notes, Quotes 2008-05-29
--DH Frank Thomas said he believes he will go on the disabled list if the significant inflammation in his right quadriceps doesn't subside within a few days. An MRI done Wednesday evening showed major swelling of the quadriceps tendon, Thomas said, and in a man his size, there's the danger the tendon might rupture if he were to play with the tendon in that condition. Thomas, who left Tuesday night's game after a double, said he's been getting treatment for the problem for two weeks.

--OF Ryan Sweeney was taken for X-rays after fouling a ball off his left foot on Wednesday. Sweeney remained in the game initially. He hit a double and played another inning in center field before being taken out. There was concern that he might have fractured a toe, according to manager Bob Geren.

--RHP Santiago Casilla saw Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., for a second opinion, and Andrews confirmed the original diagnosis of a strained right elbow. Casilla already has begun the A's throwing program, and barring any setback, he's likely to be back somewhere around mid- to late June.

--3B Eric Chavez went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in a rehab game for Class AAA Sacramento. He's expected to play again Thursday and get Friday off. Chavez's likely return date to Oakland is June 6, when the A's open a series against the Angels.

--C Kurt Suzuki's seven-game hitting streak ended as he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Suzuki threw out two runners attempting to steal, however, getting Matt Stairs in the second and Alex Rios in the sixth.

BY THE NUMBERS: 11 -- Times the A's have used the disabled list this season, already halfway to last year's Oakland-record mark of 22. Andrew Brown was the most recent addition to the DL after requiring an appendectomy last week. Eric Chavez and Kiko Calero are both close to coming off the DL, perhaps within the next week.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "This reminds me exactly of what he did in 2006. The way he's hitting, homers can come in a hurry and they can come often." -? A's second baseman Mark Ellis, on Frank Thomas' recent power surge. Thomas has hit four homers in five games.
