Oakland Athletics Notes, Quotes 2009-02-07
--RHP Michael Wuertz was acquired from the Cubs in exchange for OF Richie Robnett and INF Justin Sellers, both minor-leaguers. Wuertz, 30, is expected to be used in middle relief. He is out of options, but the A's had a spot open in the bullpen after Andrew Brown had season-ending shoulder surgery in January and was let go.

--OF Richie Robnett, a first-round pick in 2004, was sent to the Cubs in a trade that brought RHP Michael Wuertz to Oakland. The A's had focused on acquiring young outfielders the last few years, and players such as Ryan Sweeney and Aaron Cunningham had moved ahead of Robnett. He batted .236 at Triple-A Sacramento last year after missing the first part of the season because of abdominal surgery.

--OF Matt Murton, part of the Rich Harden deal with the Cubs last July, was traded to Colorado for minor-league utility player Corey Wimberly. Murton, 27, appeared in only nine games with Oakland after the Harden trade and hit .100; when the A's did not call him up in September, it was clear he was not in their plans for 2009. Murton batted .297 in 144 games with the Cubs in 2006.

--IF Corey Wimberly was acquired in a deal with the Rockies for OF Matt Murton. Wimberly, 25, will be a non-roster invitee to big-league camp. He can play second, short, third and all three outfield spots and led the Texas League in steals two years running. Wimberly also hit .407 in the Arizona Fall League in 2007.

--LHP Andrew Sisco is on Oakland's radar as a possible addition to the bullpen. The 26-year-old is coming off Tommy John surgery, and the A's were among the teams who attended a recent workout by the free agent. Sisco's agent, Terry Bross, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Sisco will be able to pitch in games in March.

BY THE NUMBERS: 7 -- The number of offseason additions on Oakland's 40-man roster heading into spring camp.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He'll need to come into spring training, have a nice spring training and a good start to the season. The guys who are performing will play." -- Manager Bob Geren on Daric Barton's playing time potentially dipping because of Jason Giambi's presence.
