Chavez did some light tossing earlier this week, and he told the newspaper that he would try to do everything, including hitting, on Friday. He also said that he believes he will be ready to play on the team's next road trip, which begins May 15 at Detroit.
Two other Oakland infielders are on the DL. Second baseman Mark Ellis has a Grade 2 sprain of his left calf that will keep him out until at least the end of May. Nomar Garciaparra is also out with a calf strain, although the A's are hopeful he will be ready to go when eligible to return on May 14.
Jack Hannahan got his first start of the season at third base Wednesday night.
RANGERS 3, A'S 2: RHP Dan Giese, making a spot start, gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings Wednesday. Oakland's starters haven't thrown more than six innings in 13 consecutive games. The A's offense continues to struggle, as Kurt Suzuki's two-run double accounted for all of the team's runs. Suzuki is the only member of the team hitting over .300. Oakland's .236 average is the worst in the league, and the team's 103 runs are the fewest in the AL.
