After playing 15 innings Sunday, the A's were thin in the bullpen, so they called up Sean Gallagher and Jerry Blevins from Class AAA Sacramento on Monday.
Gio Gonzalez, who threw 108 pitches in relief the day before -- the most by an A's reliever since pinch counts began to be tracked in 1988 -- was sent down along with infielder Eric Patterson. Manager Bob Geren had only three relievers available the day before: Gonzalez, Kevin Cameron and Russ Springer. Even though Andrew Bailey and Dan Giese got up briefly Sunday, their recent workloads ruled them out. Mike Wuertz was in the same boat. Closer Brad Ziegler was still recovering from the flu.
Gallagher, who made two appearances at Sacramento and worked five innings there, came in for Brett Anderson in the fifth inning Monday when a blister that knocked Anderson out of his previous start became a problem again.
With Patterson sent out, Gregorio Petit becomes the A's primary second baseman. Regular second baseman Mark Ellis is on the disabled list with a calf strain.
ANGELS 5, A'S 2: For the 11th game in a row, an A's starter failed to pitch past the sixth inning. On Monday, it was rookie LHP Brett Anderson who departed with two outs in the fifth with a reoccurrence of the blister that knocked him out of his previous start. Anderson already had allowed five runs by that point, with Torii Hunter driving in three and Mike Napoli two. Jack Cust struck out four times for the A's.
