Orlando Cabrera has been trying everything to get going offensively.

The shortstop, signed to a one-year, $4 million deal in March, snapped an 0-for-18 streak with a ninth-inning single Wednesday, but his next time up, he swung and missed on a hit-and-run in the 11th, and Ryan Sweeney was thrown out at second.

That's how it's been going for Cabrera, and much of the lineup, of late. When the A's try to be proactive, it's backfiring. Cabrera, for instance, has been trying to bunt for base hits a lot, with no success. He popped up a bunt attempt that ended Tuesday night's game in New York, with the Yankees' closer on the mound.

"People forget (bunting) is part of my game," he said. "And Mariano Rivera is such a tough at-bat, I thought with Jason (Giambi) coming up next, why not? I'm just trying to get on base for the guys behind me, whatever it takes."

Cabrera is batting .114 on the road and .364 at home. The A's head home for a three-game series against Tampa Bay starting Friday, then go on the road to Texas and Seattle.
