Oakland's game Thursday at Anaheim was postponed after the death of rookie right-hander Nick Adenhart in an early-morning hit-and-run accident.

Just hours before, Adenhart had thrown six scoreless innings against the A's in his fourth big-league start.

"That's what is so surreal," A's starter Dallas Braden told the San Francisco Chronicle. "We just sat and watched him dazzle one of the better lineups in baseball, watching him pitch, seeing his face, and now he won't be there today. It's unreal. It's above baseball. It's a tragedy to his family, for the Angels, for everyone in this sport."

"I was shocked when I got the message this morning," A's first baseman Jason Giambi said. "It's unbelievably sad. The guy goes out there and throws the game of his career, phenomenal, and to have that cut short ... My heart goes out to his family and all the families involved.

"This kid was just about to start his major league career, and everyone says what a great kid he was and a hard worker, and he just got to touch his dream a little bit."

Brett Anderson, who had been slated to make his big-league debut Thursday, will start Oakland's home opener Friday. Thursday's game has not been rescheduled.
