Oakland Athletics Inside Pitch 2009-03-27

Oakland's bullpen appears to be set, although neither of the team's two closers has been on the mound for the A's recently.

Joey Devine has been sidelined for two weeks because of elbow discomfort, while Brad Ziegler is pitching for the U.S. team in the World Baseball Classic.

Devine could be back working in Cactus League games a week or so before the team leaves Phoenix for the Bay Area. He is throwing off the mound and does not believe he needs much time to get ready.

He was on the U.S. provisional roster but withdrew from consideration before the team was finalized, citing his injuries last year and his desire to focus on his health this spring.

Ziegler has had some struggles in the WBC, allowing eight hits and three runs in 3 1/3 innings in primarily a middle-relief role. He is still expected to get save opportunities with Oakland, especially early on, but manager Bob Geren is likely to go with the hot hand after the first week or two.

The A's looked into signing free agents Dennys Reyes and Joe Beimel before losing out on them, which means that Jerry Blevins or Gio Gonzalez could be the team's primary left-hander in the bullpen, though a poor spring might have hurt Blevins' chances.

Russ Springer will be the main setup man, and Michael Wuertz will work in middle relief.

A strong spring by Santiago Casilla might have helped him nail down a roster spot. He's out of options, but his status was iffy.

Chris Schroder and Kevin Cameron are expected to provide depth at Class AAA Sacramento along with Jeff Gray, who pitched well this spring before being sent out in the first round of cuts.
