Veteran infielder Nomar Garciaparra and left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes remain targets for the A's, too, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Garciaparra is considering retirement, but if the A's land him, he would handle backup duties at third and first base, a spot held by Jack Hannahan.
Hannahan hit a major league low .218 last year and he's left-handed, while Garciaparra would provide the A's a right-handed bat off the bench. He hit .339 against left-handers last year.
Cabrera lowered his salary demands significantly, from $9 million-plus, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Bobby Crosby, all but given up on as Oakland's shortstop, hit a home run in his first at-bat of the spring after having worked with Mark McGwire much of the offseason.
Reyes would provide the A's a veteran left-hander in the bullpen. Jerry Blevins, a second-year player, is the only returning left-handed reliever.
