A's outfielder Travis Buck saw Adenhart, 22, in the lobby between the home and visiting clubhouses at Angel Stadium at about 11 p.m. on Wednesday night, less than two hours before the accident.
Adenhart had just pitched six shutout innings in a game the A's won 6-4.
"I didn't hear anything until this morning, I got a text from my brother," Buck said. "It's kind of surreal. I faced him a few times in the minor leagues and got to know him a little bit. I saw him last night after the game. You wake up the next morning and see that, and you get chills up and down your spine."
The news put things in perspective for Buck.
"The game that we play I get up and I'm dwelling on last night. I go 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Then you see something like this, and reality is more important."
There's been no word on when tonight's game will be made up. It was supposed to be a nostalgic night for the Angels , as two of their franchise greats Brian Downing and Chuck Finley were going to be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame.
A's closer Brad Ziegler received a text from an Angels player at about 7 a.m. this morning relaying the news to him. He didn't know Adenhart well but was still distraught over the situation.
"At times, it's like Baseball shouldn't even exist," Ziegler said. "As much as I love these guys and love playing, and you enjoy the camaraderie ... At times like this, the camaraderie is what have to lean on. We've lost a member of our brotherhood.
"It could have happened to one of our guys. It was a late game, and I'm pretty sure at 12 o'clock last night, not every guy on our team was in their hotel room. Maybe they were just out at dinner. It's not like they did anything wrong. Nick was just driving, and lives are forever changed."
